What makes a library a library? Is it a collection of books, of shelves, or just a statement of intent? Ex Libris seems to address that question in an intriguingly defensive manner. The circle itself, despite being an organic shape with one distinct entry point, feels closed. You go in. You come back out. And you have to break the barrier of the circle to even consider entering it in the first place.
The circle is defensive. It stands off from the space. It does not feel engaged. The entry point is a liminal space that you don’t (and won’t) stay in. I can imagine that when fully shelved with books (as indeed, the description intimates), it could prove quite an intimidating piece to experience. It’s an intriguing piece but distinctly antithetical to what I want my library to deliver.
